April’s details:

This months nerdiness is wonderfully eclectic. We continue our foraging theme, this time with mushrooms (a lot of nerds want to talk about mushrooms and I, for one, am for it)! We also have the story of an epically long breakup from olden times, taking place across continents!
$5 suggested donation at the door. Get your dinner beforehand at the fabulous Judd’s
Breakup by Snail Mail:
Ebru Kardan has been living in the valley since 2004, and currently works at UMass Amherst as Sr. Director of Diversity Communications. While not a professional relationship expert, she’s had extensive experience with breakups and obsessing over strange historical stories. She hopes to merge those two areas of experience into an entertaining talk for the audience.
What I’ve Learned from Mushrooms:
Over the last year I’ve become consumed by the act of foraging for wild mushrooms on Mt Tom and in learning how to identify what is edible through smell, sight, & spore prints I’ve also learned a bit about myself, community, and trees.
Grammy-nominated Seth Glier is a singer-songwriter, producer, and multi-instrumentalist who lives in Holyoke. With five albums, five Independent Music Awards, and even a U.S. State Department-sponsored international tour under his belt, Glier has also shared the stages with artists such as Ani DiFranco, Martin Sexton, James Taylor, Ronnie Spector, and Marc Cohn.He will also be performing at Race Street Live on May 26th.

Dine at GCA! Judd’s Bar & Restaurant is open Wednesday through Saturday from 5pm to 10pm.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Nerd Nite?

Nerd Nite allows people to share their passions with others in a social setting. The general format is two presenters give a talk for 20 minutes and have a question and answer period after. There is a visual element to the presentation. This is often in the form of a powerpoint presentation or slide show but there are many creative ways to show what you care about!

How do I become a presenter?

Email kevin@gatewaycityarts.com with a brief description of what you’d like to share.

What kind of topics can I present on?

Almost anything! Some topics have been about the first imaging of a black hole, birding in downtown Holyoke, brutalist web design, and surviving a plane crash. Give us a shot and we’ll figure it out!

What do I need to present?

A deep, abundant passion for your subject! We require some form of visual element. This is a presentation, not a lecture. While most presentations are powerpoint focused, we have had demonstrations from dancing to lasers. As long as it fits the space, is safe, and legal, you can do what you like!

You said powerpoint. Do I need to bring my own laptop and projector?

We have an in-house projector and sound system. If you don’t have a laptop we can provide one. We ask that you send us the powerpoint at least a day ahead so we can make sure everything works.

What's all this about beer and socializing?

Nerd Nite Holyoke will take place in the Race Street Live Music Hall at Gateway City Arts on April 6. Future Nerd Nites will be held in our Divine Theater. The bar is staffed and you are encouraged to get your favorite beverage. Tip heavy! Additionally, Judd’s Bar & Restaurant is open across the hall. Show up early and have dinner. Or stay late and have dinner. Have dinner!
